Germany’s GHG quota, the Dutch emission reduction units and FuelEU Maritime all reward the greenhouse gas saved, not the volume. Without a valid proof of sustainability, a biofuel counts as fossil. When proofs arrive weeks after the product has moved, you can’t prove the intensity in time, so you sell at the safe minimum.
Every counterparty sends its own template, with footnotes instead of tick boxes, fields named differently, values that don’t add up or a certificate reissued after an audit. Traders close their mass balance at least every three months, so one wrong proof carries into every claim of the quarter. On most desks, the rules that should catch it live in one person’s head or a 55-page contract.
