RFNBO at Industrial Scale: Inside Energiepark Bad Lauchstädt

Energiepark Bad Lauchstädt has reached a significant milestone in the development of its green hydrogen value chain, with hydrogen production at the site achieving RFNBO certification.

The electrolyzer developed by Uniper Hydrogen and VNG Handel & Vertrieb through their joint venture Elektrolyse Mitteldeutschland GmbH, the project brings together the production, transport, marketing and use of renewable hydrogen, testing the entire value chain at industrial scale.

The certification, issued by GUTcert and following an initial audit under the ISCC scheme, confirms the hydrogen produced at Energiepark Bad Lauchstädt meets the European requirements as RFNBO-compliant.

Atmen has supported Uniper Hydrogen and VNG Handel & Vertrieb throughout their preparation for RFNBO certification, providing a shared compliance platform.

Beyond the electrolyzer: Inside Energiepark Bad Lauchstädt

Energiepark Bad Lauchstädt is one of Germany’s Real-World Laboratories for the Energy Transition, designed to test the green hydrogen value chain under industrial conditions. At the site, a large-scale electrolyzer of up to 30 MW uses renewable electricity from a nearby wind farm to produce green hydrogen.

But production is only one part of the project. The hydrogen will then be transported through a converted gas pipeline into the hydrogen network serving Central Germany’s chemical industry. By connecting production and, in a second phase, storage, transport, and use within one project, the developers, a consortium of Terrawatt Planungsgesellschaft, Uniper, VNG Handel & Vertrieb, VNG Gasspeicher, ONTRAS, DBI-Gastechnologisches Institut, and VNG AG, are testing how these technologies can work together at industrial scale and progress towards market maturity.

From renewable hydrogen to verified RFNBO compliance

Producing hydrogen with renewable electricity is just the starting point.

Under the EU framework, renewable electricity sourcing is assessed against specific conditions, including rules around additionality, temporal correlation and geographical correlation, depending on how the electricity is supplied. 

At Bad Lauchstädt, those requirements meet a particularly distinctive electricity and metering setup. The project describes the direct coupling of the nearby wind farm with the large-scale electrolyzer as a world first: both components are directly electrically connected via a privately operated site grid.

Embedding compliance with Atmen

Working with Atmen from the preparation stage, the teams used Atmen Automate as their shared compliance platform to structure and manage certification data and evidence, surfacing potential gaps early and reducing friction during audit and reporting.
